@holysmoke throws an anvil onto the Titanic #ukuncut

There's been a lot of discussion on Twitter today about UK Uncut's decision to hold a street party outside Nick Clegg's house. Some have criticised the decision, arguing that it could intimidate Clegg's children, though to be honest the whole thing looks rather jolly.

Louise Mensch MP even went so far as to suggest people show their disapproval by making a donation to the Lib Dems. One person who took her up on the suggestion is Telegraph Blogs Editor Damian Thompson. His announcement, and the responses, are below.

I think "throwing an anvil onto the Titanic" is now my new favourite metaphor.

Gardening with @WeAreTheBrits and @WelshToy #EDL

Here's a surreal conversation between pretend-Para walt @WeAreTheBrits and his partner-in-trolling @Welshtoy, with the former apparently taking his imaginary military career into his gardening.

The Right Ear Dictionary 7: Open Your Eyes

Open your eyes (adjective)
1. To contract the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, thereby drawing back the superior eyelid across the eye. Can be done either voluntarily or involuntarily, as in the blink reflex.
2. To consume near-lethal doses of hallucinogenic substances, thereby causing you to enter into a deranged, paranoid alternative version of reality.

Hat tip to @NazisNotWelcome for suggesting this one.

Paedogeddon for @EDLTRobinson

In recent weeks the EDL have been milking the Rochdale sex abuse case for all its worth, to try to link Islam with paedophilia. Yesterday, their leader Tommy Robinson tweeted,

Yep, paedophilia is disgusting. Racism is also disgusting.

Which makes this exchange rather unfortunate.

Nadine #Dorries and the dusky-hued gentleman #HIGFNY

Yesterday evening, what may be a rather unfortunate attempt at humour from Nadine Dorries MP.

Hmmm, what is it about the black man that makes her want to reach for a shotgun when he talks to her daughter?

Okay, that may not have been how it was intended to come across. And indeed, Ms Dorries soon followed her tweet with, "That remark wasn't intended to sound racist, but I can see how it might come across that way. Apologies for any offence caused, however unintentional."

Oh wait, she didn't reply saying that at all. Instead she retorted to various responses like this. Oh dear.

EDITED TO ADD: Ms Dorries has since clarified that her remarks her about Hunter's reputation as a womaniser, not his ethnicity. Fair enough, though couldn't you have said that straight away, Nadine, rather than calling people "PC and boring" or a "pratt"? I thought politicians were supposed to be about communication?

@darkknightsam joins the knights who say nitwit #EDL

Seriously, what is it about EDL supporters and imagining they're a medieval knight? I haven't seen so much pretend chivalry since the opening of the Simon Cowell Seduction School.

This latest recruit to the Gartered Order of Keyboard Masturbators appears to be making use of a #RiseOfTheKnights hashtag, if anyone is in the mood for a spot of light trolling.

@nickgriffinmep vs The Internet #BNP #EDL

Bit of a bad couple of days for Nick Griffin's attempts to use the Internet without looking like an utter tool. First, he managed to throw the Oldham sex abuse trial into jeopardy, leaving him floundering to justify himself.

Not only that, but yesterday he managed to do something no Twitter user had ever done before. He succeeded in losing an argument with @Official_EDL.

The Right Ear Dictionary 6: The Churchill Prophecy

The Churchill Prophecy (theological concept)
Mystical vision by the late wartime leader, in which he foretold that the Waffen SS Panzer divisions would one day have their goals fulfilled by a bunch of students waving placards.

In the aftermath of World War Two, Churchill succumbed to a mix of wartime exhaustion, brandy and a slightly odd-tasting mushroom omelette. When he recovered consciousness, he wrote down the terrifying vision that he had experienced in his delerium.

....Yea, and the heavens opened and I did see a legion marching, and they did wear duffle coats and had placards. Lots of placards. And they did chant multitudes of slogans, and some of these slogans were a bit silly.
And the Lord said unto me, "O Winston, you know that rampaging army that laid waste to Europe? The one that created untold genocide and destruction? Well, this lot are just like that."
And I did say unto the Lord, "What, even the one with the bobble hat and the packed lunch?"
And the Lord said, "Especially the one with the bobble hat and the packed lunch."

Every religion has its heretics. There are some blasphemers out there who insist that Churchill never actually said this, and that it was actually the words of a 1930s American politician speaking in a different context.

The Right Ear Dictionary 5: Unite Against Fascism

Unite Against Fascism (collective noun)
1. Protest movement involving various groups and members of different political parties. Has been praised for actively opposing the far-right, but also criticised for confrontational tactics and what some see as the excessive influence of the Socialist Workers Party.
2. Absolutely everyone who has ever criticised the far-right ever ever ever. Seriously, ever.

@CllrSueA suspends herself #EDL

There was a big fuss today after Sue Anderson, a Conservative councillor in Bournemouth, posted tweets supporting the EDL and making apparently racist remarks.

This evening, she issued this statement.

From browsing around Twitter, it appears that Nick King, the chair of Dorset Conservatives, acted very promptly in response to the outrage.

It also appears that a lot of the impetus came not just from the usual anti-fascist tweeters but also from @martinrossiter - who those of you who remember 90s Britpop may recall as being that bloke from Gene.

In which case, this should be an appropriate victory anthem.

@CllrSueA #Bournemouth #Tory Councillor supports #EDL

Sue Anderson, a Conservative councillor in Bournemouth, is currently causing a Twitterstorm after declaring her support for the English Defence League.

I thought the Tories were supposed to be tough on crime? So why is Councillor Anderson declaring her support for a bunch of violent, drunken, racist neanderthals who cause trouble wherever they go?

Turns out it's not the first time she's leapt to their defence. See this exchange with Richard Stay MP.

Or maybe, Sue, "left wing loonies" don't so much "want to stop Englishmen parading the Flag of England" as stop a nasty gaggle of football casuals intimidating and assaulting people on our streets?

Councillor Anderson doesn't seem very loyal to her own party, as this tweet suggests.

It's not only her own party she doesn't seem loyal to. She doesn't even seem that keen on her own constituents!

Well, Sue, since you don't seem to much like being in the Tory Party, and don't seem to much like your constituents either, maybe you should just quit?

For that matter, maybe we should help her to quit? If you're appalled by Councillor Anderson's statements, feel free to e-mail Nick King, chair of the Dorset Conservative Party, at .

EDITED TO ADD: Councillor Anderson seems to have deleted the offending tweet now, though screenshots are all over the Internet. Here's something else that she's previously tweeted and deleted. Hat tip: @EDLNewsXtra)

@NotAGateway is an arts company run by Deepa Naik and Trenton Oldfield. I wonder whether Councillor Anderson felt she was replying to the person with the foreign-sounding name or the one with the British-sounding name?

EDITED AGAIN TO ADD: Councillor Anderson has now issued the following statement.

@Suzycasuals does her bit for law and order #EDL

About a week ago, a couple of OAPs running a Socialist Workers Party stall were attacked by far-right thugs.

Mr Smith said: "They were shouting something about Brighton and accused us of attacking women and children."
A group knocked over the men's table before coming back a short while later in a group of around 10 men and one woman.
One man approached Mr Smith and began talking to him.
Mr Smith said: "In the middle of the conversation I had an uneasy feeling and he head butted me - one blow to the face.
"I was on the ground and sort of remember crouching, like a boxer who's gone down in the ring. I was completely dazed."

Now, I'm personally not much a fan of the SWP, but I'm even less of a fan of people being left looking this.

As it happens, EDL activist @Suzycasuals seemed to know something about it.

Very kind of Suzy to provide that information, especially given that her Tweeter feed is read by lots of anti-fascists. Because this subsequently happened.

Good work, Suzy!

Far-Right Election Shadenfreude Extravaganza #EDL #BFP #BNP

Of course, the big story of the election is the advance of Labour at the expense of the Tories and Lib Dems. Even so, let's take a little time out to laugh at the annihilation of the far-right. The BNP saw their councillors wiped out. Meanwhile the English Defence League's new political party, the British Freedom Party, polled absolutely negligible votes.

The Twitter feeds for the EDL, the British Defence League and Tommy Robinson have been strangely silent on the matter. Meanwhile, Nick Griffin has been happy to bring the self-delusion.

Meanwhile, at least some of the EDL/BFP supporters have been willing to comment on the election results.

When fascists get a drubbing, remember to dance like this.

@MrHarryCole puts the vote out for @ken4london

Did you all do your democratic duty today? If you haven't yet, and you live in London, here's an -election pledge from Guido's co-blogger Harry Cole.

You all know what to do.
